On sunday, Ugandan professional athelete Rebecca Cheptegei’s boyfriend attacked her and set her on fire. As an immediate reponse, she was hospitalised in Eldoret, Kenya.
After 80% burn injuries Rebecca suffered but lost her life few hours back.
What was the incident ?
Local administration in the region ,where Rebecca Cheptegei used to live and train in Kenya was attacked, said important things about the incident.
Rebecca and her boyfriend had some land related issues between them. It led to attack on Rebecca when she came home from church that day.
Accroding to BBC this was the 3rd such attack on female athelete in Uganda since 2021. There is an global concern over increasing incidents on female atheletes, not only in African countries but also all over the world.
Who is Rebecca Cheptegei ?
- Rebecca Cheptegei was born on 22 February 1991 in the Bukwo district of Uganda
- In her professional life, she was a cross country runner and also long-distance runner
- Rebecca was a national record holder of Uganda in long-distance running
- She recently competed in summer olympics 2024 in marathon event. She ended up 44th on the olympic level event.
